I was asked by Gary Dow, head of Communications & Marketing for Pomfret School to be the featured illustrator for their cover story for Pomfret School’s Magazine which was published in Spring of 2022. The story was about students’ perspectives and experiences during the COVID Pandemic Lockdown. I came up with a concept of showing a student at home working in his living room all day on homework and projects and then passing out at the end of the day watching Netflix for the opening spread. We included spot illustrations that coincided with student interviews. Two of the illustrations were chosen to be in American Illustration 45 competition that year. They were featured in the AI Party in NYC in November of 2022.

Goal

In collaboration with Gary Dow and art directed by Jordain Kempain, the story and illustrations focused on students’ experiences during the pandemic. We did not want the art to feel depressive or dark but have glimpses of fun and hope through it all.

Approach

Are you curious about how students at Pomfret School felt during the time of the pandemic?  As the head of communications, Gary Dow asked me to illustrate the cover story, capturing the essence of their emotions. The concept was simple yet profound – a student studying in the living room, focused on the television, symbolizing the challenges they faced. And when night falls, the same student, exhausted, drifts off to sleep in front of the TV, highlighting their resilience. Sprinkled throughout the editorial, spot illustrations bring to life the moments that shaped their journey during COVID.

Results

As a result of Gary and Jordan’s collaboration with me and my initial concept, the opening spread illustration and one spot illustration showing social distancing at Pomfret’s Quad led to an acceptance into American Illustration for 2022 and a successful Spring Issue of Pomfret Magazine.
